Show a fair cookie banner

← I want to…

Written for Cookie Rocks 2.9.14, checked on 5 November 2026. The current version is 2.11.2: some details may have changed.

This guide is for site owners who want a banner that respects visitors: refusing as easy as accepting, a choice kept for the right time, and a way to change their choice on every page.

You need: Cookie Rocks Audit (free) to check the banner you already use. Cookie Rocks Pro to get a banner that does all this by itself.

Check your current banner

  1. Open Cookie Rocks, then Obligations. Answer the four questions, then click Show what the law asks of my site. Cookie Rocks then knows which countries’ rules apply to you.
  2. Open Cookies and click Scan my pages. The scan reads the buttons of your banner on your home page.
  3. Open Consent. Under Your cookie banner, read two rows: “Reject” on the first layer and Choice kept for.
  4. If “Reject” on the first layer says No or To check, open the settings of your cookie plugin. Add a “Reject” button next to “Accept”, with the same size and look.
  5. If Choice kept for does not match what your countries ask, change the duration in your cookie plugin. If it says Not readable from your site, check it there. The usual advice is 6 months, 13 at most.
  6. Check that a link to change one’s choice sits on every page, usually in the footer. Most cookie plugins give a “Manage cookies” link or shortcode for that. A link to your cookie policy is not enough.
  7. Click Scan my pages again. Then open Overview: the points about your buttons and your duration should be gone.

If you see… “No button or link to change one’s mind was found on your home page” on the Overview page: your countries expect one. Add the “Manage cookies” link of your banner to your footer, then scan again.
