Cookie Rocks and NextGEN Gallery: images stay, videos call out

videos open players

← Cookie Rocks for your stack

NextGEN Gallery image galleries set no cookie and store nothing in visitors’ browsers. Video galleries in the Pro version are different: opening a video builds a player from YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok or another provider. That player sets the provider’s cookies.

What NextGEN Gallery adds to your visitors’ browser

No trackers In our test of NextGEN Gallery 4.5.5 on 7 November 2026, the plugin itself added no tracker and no cookie. What you place in your pages with it, such as a video or a map, still counts.

What matters for consent with NextGEN Gallery

Image galleries are quiet

On visitor pages NextGEN Gallery sets no cookie and no browser storage. Its only cookie is set in the admin.

Video players are built by script

In Pro video galleries, the thumbnail only holds the video address. The player frame is created by JavaScript when the visitor opens the lightbox: YouTube on its main domain, Vimeo without its do-not-track flag, Wistia, Dailymotion or TikTok. A banner that reads the page HTML cannot see these frames.

A click is not consent

Opening a video is a click on your gallery, not a choice about the provider’s cookies. If you use video galleries, the visitor’s choice has to cover the player too.

Statistics about the site

Usage statistics are off until an administrator turns them on. They are sent by your server and describe the site, not visitors.

What our tests found on NextGEN Gallery

  • Set before the choice · NextGEN GalleryNextGEN Pro video galleries create players a banner reading the HTML cannot hold

The player is created by script when the lightbox opens: YouTube (not youtube-nocookie), Vimeo without dnt, Dailymotion, Twitch, TikTok and others. The page only carries the video address.

Read in its code, 16 October 2026, NextGEN Gallery 4.5.3.

    Full detail

In NextGEN video galleries (Pro), nextgen_video_helper.js creates the player iframe with document.createElement when the visitor opens the lightbox: www.youtube.com/embed (not youtube-nocookie), player.vimeo.com without dnt, Dailymotion, Twitch, VideoPress or fast.wistia.net; TikTok galleries create www.tiktok.com/embed/v2. Thumbnails only carry data-video-url, so a banner that reads the HTML does not hold these iframes.

How we test it

Around each version, with its latest release

Around each Cookie Rocks version, a fresh WordPress installs its latest version from WordPress.org next to Cookie Rocks and runs the same checks. A new version joins the next run on its own.

  • NextGEN Gallery 4.5.5, tested on 7 November 2026.
  • The banner shows, the trackers of the test page wait for consent and load after it, and Cookie Rocks raises no PHP error.
  • Settings of the test: Default settings after activation.
  • Last run: NextGEN Gallery 4.5.5 on 7 November 2026, with WordPress 7.1.3.

Questions

Do image galleries need consent?

No. Image galleries load nothing from another server and set no cookie on visitor pages.

What happens after the 30-day trial?

The banner, your visitors’ choices and your proofs of consent keep working. Without a key, most settings lock, updates and support stop. Take a key at any time and everything opens again.
